catching up with Ross Sewage

The last time I got tangled up with Creepsylvanian thrashers Ghoul, they threatened to kill and eat me. Frankly, I was lucky to escape with my skin (even if it was covered in food colouring). But when they announced they would be releasing their first comic book, written and drawn by Exhumed/Impaled bassist Ross Sewage, I had to find out more. Ross was kind enough to fill me in on how the idea for the book came about, its Kickstarter campaign, and the likelihood of a sequel.

nostalgia as curation

back in the day was still too late

Ah, nostalgia. Can anyone resist the temptation of romanticizing the music of their youth - especially if they just missed it? A few recent documentaries - Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC and the BBC series Music For Misfits: The Story of Indie have come not to bury the past but to praise it.

Hellbound? (Probably)

This guy? Definitely.

Just watched the documentary Hellbound?. It's pretty dry for the most part, and the points it makes are fairly obvious - evangelists are nutty and hypocritical, Christian theology is convoluted and open to interpretation. But the filmmakers won my heart with a brief detour into a European metal festival, where they catch Deicide's Glen Benton being his typically wry self, and ask Oderus Urungus to name three people he thinks are in hell ("Jesus. Every pope ever. That's more than three. Ronald Reagan is in hell, believe it or not."). The filmmakers also interview David "Soul Patch" Vincent and Mayhem's Necrobutcher (who seems uniquely ill-suited for documentary interviews).

Not Dead Yet

I just finished watching the documentary Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet. Becker was the guitarist for Eighties classical shredders Cacophony  - the "other" guitarist, the one who didn't get famous by joining Megadeth. For metal guys who subscribed to guitar magazines and practiced scales everyday, Cacophony's Speed Metal Symphony was a high water mark for widdly widdly WAHHHH! You don't need me to tell you it was big in Japan.

Earth's Doomiest Heroes

I just saw the documentary Such Hawks, Such Hounds after it was mentioned in a recent article on the AVClub; I described it on Facebook as "the Avengers of doom metal." In what may be my dorkiest moment ever, I've decided to run with that, partly because I'm still geeking out over how good the Avengers was, but mostly to prove there isn't a metaphor that I can't ride through the night until it collapses from exhaustion.
