Joining the canon of great books about underground metal, USBM: A Revolution of Identity in American Black Metal is a Who's Who (and sometimes just "Who?") of the American black metal scene. Written by Decibel Magazine's Daniel Lake, the book is over 500 pages long, and tells the story of American black metal from the point of view of the bands who defined it - bands like Profanatica, Leviathan, and Xasthur.

I spoke to author Daniel Lake about what led him to write this book, what unifies US black metal bands, and what differentiates them from their European predecessors. We also delved deep into the character and history of American black metal, as well as the diametrically opposed philosophies and approaches that split the scene.

My thanks to Daniel for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening.
