Scott Burns should be familiar to everyone who visits this site; as a producer and engineer, he recorded some of the most important albums in the American death metal canon - not to mention seminal albums by Sepultura, Napalm Death, and Gorguts. His tireless work is being celebrated in a new book called The Scott Burns Sessions: A Life in Death Metal 1987 - 1997, which was written with music journalist David E. Gehlke, and is out now through Decibel Books.
I spoke with Scott and David about how working on Turned Inside Out: The Official Story of Obituary led to their friendship, and why Scott wanted the book to include the less popular bands he recorded. We also discussed how opinions about death metal have evolved since the Nineties, and why Scott takes no credit for the enduring popularity of the albums he worked on.
My thanks again to Scott and David for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
