It was on an obscure regional compilation that I discovered The Crown, back when they were still known as Crown Of Thorns. Amidst tracks by Grotesque, Liers In Wait, and Sacrilege, The Crown represented a resurgence in the Swedish Death Metal scene, as well as a new standard of extremity in the region. A few years later, they would sign to Metal Blade and eclipse virtually every other band on that comp, becoming trailblazers with their own brand of feral rock-inflected death metal.
I spoke with guitarist Marko Tervonen about the early years of The Crown, and how the band related to the rest of the Swedish death metal scene. We also discussed why their latest album Royal Destroyer is a sequel to Cobra Speed Venom, and how Marko thinks The Crown will be remembered.
My thanks to Marko for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening.
