This past October, Nelson's Vargafrost headlined the first night of the Symbiotic Metal Fest in Wellington, New Zealand. Epic and filled with references to Norse mythology, their music brings immediate comparisons to Bathory's seminal "viking" period - perhaps overturning expectations of a metal band from New Zealand.
In a car parked behind Valhalla, I spoke with the band about their history, their reasons for using ancient European history as subject matter, and their latest album Honour Blood, Spirit And Love. We also spoke about how living in the South Island city of Nelson helps inspire their music.
