Here is the 71st installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Christchurch, New Zealand black metal band Men An Tol.
This past October, I made my second visit to New Zealand - a country that I'm slightly obsessed with, due to it having one of the more interesting and overlooked music scenes in the world. I planned my trip to Wellington to coincide with the Symbiotic Metal Fest - a three day fest that showcases metal bands from around New Zealand, and takes place in a metal pub called Valhalla. One of the stand-outs from the first night of the fest was Men An Tol, whose sombre, doomy style of black metal is fits right in with the music already featured on this blog.
I sat down with the band after their set. We discussed their history, the scene in their home city Christchurch, and the creation of their debut album Dead Trees. It was a fun and lively conversation that put to rest my reservations about interviewing black metal bands for the podcast.
My thanks to the guys in Men An Tol for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
