In a city that's known for musical visionaries, Imperial Triumphant quickly made a name for themselves with their adventurousness. The trio has built on the blackened death metal of their earliest releases by integrating their jazz and classical influences, encapsulating the chaos of living in New York City while aptly representing its status as a hub of creativity and innovation.
I spoke with bassist/keyboardist Steve Blanco about why he switched to playing bass after spending most of his career focused on the piano, and how a Craigslist ad led him to Imperial Triumphant. We also discussed how Dave Lombardo, Tomas Haake, and Yoshiko Ohara became a part of the latest Imperial Triumphant album Goldstar, and why the band doesn't care about metal's self-imposed rules.
My thanks again to Steve for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
