As a folk/viking metal scene took shape in Scandinavia under the auspices of Nineties black metal, Dublin's Primordial pioneered a style that integrated their own Irish heritage with black, doom, and traditional heavy metal. Three decades on and with ten albums under their belt, the band's legacy is separate from any scene or genre.
I spoke with vocalist Alan Averill (aka A.A. Nemtheanga) about what drew him to black metal, and why he bases his lyrics on Irish history rather than mythology. We also discussed whether Primordial has evolved over the years, and the meaning behind the cryptic title of their latest album, How It Ends.
My thanks again to Alan for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
