an interview with Mortify

Tokyo-based trio Mortify beefs up their short, sharp grindcore with the buzzsaw sound of clasic Swedish death metal - a "chocolate + peanut butter" approach that ensures maximum carnage. Since their newest EP Grotesque Buzzsaw Defilement has been frying my speakers, I decided I needed to know more about them. Vocalist Adam Jennings (also of Disrotted and Sick/Tired) was kind enough to answer my questions.

Dreams of Consciousness: Please introduce Mortify - who are you, where are you from, and how would you describe the music you make?

Greetings ghouls and Buzzsaw freaks! We are Mortify from Tokyo, Japan. Our music has been called everything from shit-stained HM2 death grind to blood boiling zit-chewing goregrind. We have Ryo on the casket crushing drums, Tak on the skin peeling strings and I am Adam - I belch and burp and barf.

DoC: Please give a brief history of your band - what brought the three of you together? What did you hope to accomplish when you formed?

My doom band Disrotted did a split with su19b [Ryo's other band - DoC] in 2015 which led to two tours of Japan and a king last friendship between myself and Ryo. After those two tours I decided to swim across the ocean in the shark-infested waters and relocate here to Tokyo. We immediately decided to start a band as soon as I arrived. And that’s exactly what we did. Within a week of me being here, I had some rough tracks to listen to of what would become our first demo.

DoC: Mortify is obviously very influenced by the sound of early Swedish death metal. What is it that you like about that style? What would you say are the albums that had the biggest impact on you?

The HM2 is the juice that’s needed to rev up the saw!! We love the classic bands like Carnage, Dismember, Entombed but we are also grossly influenced by sickos like Pungent Stench, Blood, Agathocles, Impetigo, etc., etc.

DoC: Two members of the band reside in Japan, while vocalist Adam resides in the US. With this in mind, what is your songwriting process like?

So yes, I was born and raised in the heart of Illinoize, however I moved to Japan in the summer of 2017. So the songwriting process is quite sleazy.

DoC: In 2019 you released your first album, Stench of Swedish Buzzsaw. Where were the instrumental tracks and vocals recorded? How long had you been working on it? What were your intentions for the album?

Again, the vocals were easy to record. We rented a studio - while I was dying from an intense fever - drank a lot of coffee and whiskey and completed the vocals in a couple of hours. We played the songs live for about two years or so, so we had to really mold it into the disgusting bitch mucous shit monster it is. My goal was to make something that resembled the campy, fun and gross vibes of Impetigo and Blood.

DoC: What can you tell me about the lyrics of Mortify? What kinds of themes/subject matter interest you?

Crucified zombies, burritos stuffed with maggots, dogs with saggy diapers, syringes filled with ooze and pus, picking scabs, scabs that bleed, werewolves with talking erections, being buried in slime....all of the family favorites without all of the stupid misogynistic bullshit.

DoC: Tell me about drummer Ryo's studio, Extremy Negative Minds. Is it a home/personal studio, or does he also record other bands there?

Like Tommy Lee, Ryo has a drum throne in his home which is suspended from chains inside of a moldy, airless, piss stained closet that is perfect for auto-erotic asphyxiation and/or sniffing mayonnaise stained nylons. He uses this sniff chamber for all of his other projects as well and the residents of the neighborhood have created quite the urban legend for this room of horrors.

DoC: You have a new EP coming out called Grotesque Buzzsaw Defilement. What can you tell me about the songs on the new EP? How would you compare this EP to Stench of Swedish Buzzsaw?

I think this EP is more focused and more aggressive than the previous release. However there are no synth parts, clean singing, or stoner rock riffs. This is still pure Buzzsaw fueled metal!!

DoC: How did Horror Pain Gore Death get involved with the release of Grotesque Buzzsaw Defilement?

Written on the walls in their own blood was a message, begging to join the Buzzsaw cult. After a long debate and some rounds of sniffing moldy lunchboxes - we agreed and we are very happy to join such a disgusting roster of like-minded fiends.

DoC: What's next for Mortify?

Hey freaks! We are about to record a new split with H.A.R.M. for 625! Expect more sewage spilling, boil bursting HM2 vile madness. Hail the Buzzsaw! Cheers and thanks for all the support.
