"There's so many stories in the Finnish scene that should be told, and somebody should write a book." That was the mission statement that led to Rotting Ways to Misery, a 300 page tome that traces the evolution of the Finnish death metal scene from teenagers playing youth centers to the global renown of bands like Amorphis and Sentenced. Written by Finnish metal lifers Markus Makkonen [Nerve Saw, Sadistik Forest, ex-Hooded Menace] and Kim Strömsholm [Festerday, ...And Oceans], it joins a growing canon of books dedicated to documenting the heaviest of metals.

I spoke with Kim and Markus about why they decided to write a book about Finnish death metal - at first independently from each other, and ultimately as a collaboration. We also spoke about the scene's rise, collapse, recent resurgence, and whether Finnish death metal may be held in higher regard in other countries.
My thanks to Kim and Markus for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening.
