Geist & The Sacred Ensemble are a good representation of the experimental, nature-influenced music scene emerging from the Pacific Northwest of the US. Though not "metal" in the traditional sense, their mix of apocalyptic folk and drone has a lot in common with bands like Swans and Neurosis.
I spoke with founder/vocalist/guitarist Michael Sauder about the road trip to the Pacific Northwest that led to the band forming, and the ways his environment affects his music. We also discussed the upcoming album Waning Hymns, and how he writes heavy songs without relying on distortion or effects.
My thanks to Michael for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
