Cherubs from Austin, TX, are a cult band in the annals of noise rock; as described by vocalist/guitarist Kevin Whitley, their "sweetness has a lot of salt in it" - as good a way as any to describe their unorthodox time signatures, atonal riffs, and use of noise for its own sake.
In the first part of my interview with Kevin, we go over the formation of Cherubs, the history of the Austin punk scene, and the process of writing and recording their first three Cherubs albums (two of which came out after the band had already called it quits). We also discuss how a Cherubs tribute album released two decades later led to the band reforming.
Stay tuned for Part Two, which will be online shortly.
My thanks to Kevin for speaking to me, and to you for listening.
