Hailing from the Venice Beach punk and skateboarding community that also produced Suicidal Tendencies, Excel were mainstays of the Eighties crossover/thrash scene. Following their third album Seeking Refuge, the band went on hiatus - yet another casualty of a shifting music industry that kept metal at arm's length. They re-emerged in 2014 to play some reunion shows, and their first two albums were re-issued by Southern Lord Records shortly thereafter.
I spoke with bassist Shaun Ross about how doom metal pioneers Trouble influenced his songs, and why it's important for him to keep Excel relevant to modern audiences. We also discussed why Seeking Refuge is considered a "lost" album, and what the next Excel album might sound like.
My thanks again to Shaun for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
