Having started as as a bedroom project, meth. quickly expanded to a full line-up after absorbing members of fellow Chicago band Black Nail. Their music similarly expanded from frenetic bursts of mathcore to include sludge, black metal and noise (a sound the members joklingly refer to as "scarycore").

I spoke with frontman Seb Alvarez and bassist Nate Spainhower about why meth. moved away from "playing a million notes", and how bleeding onstage is part of the band's desire for authenticity. We also discussed why Seb handed off writing duties for meth.'s latest release Shame to the other band members, and the creative contributions producer Colin Marston made while mixing the album.

My thanks again to Seb and Nate for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
