The seeds of Profanatica were planted with three demos recorded in the Nineties - after the band's members had split from death metal legends Incantation, but before black metal became inextricably linked with Scandinavia. Confrontational and antagonistic to all dogmas, the band offers a valuable counter-narrative to the accepted history of the genre... a dissenting opinion that they express with entertaining candor and little diplomacy.
I spoke with Profanatica founder/drummer/vocalist Paul Ledney about his issues with modern black metal, and why it took Profanatica so long to release their first full-length. We also had an in-depth discussion about his distinctive drumming style, and how the Catholic Stations of the Cross provided the blueprint for Profanatica's latest assault on religion, Crux Simplex.
My thanks to Paul for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
