Bergen's Seven Impale hail from the unofficial capital of Norwegian black metal, but their music is a far cry from the grim and frostbitten scene that sprung up around them. Organs and saxophones weave through the sextet's compositions, leading to a singular kind of prog rock that's both jazzy and heavy.
I spoke with Seven Impale saxophonist Benjamin Widerøe, drummer Fredrik Widerøe, and vocalist/guitarist Stian Økland about creating saxophone parts for heavy music, and why songwriting is a conversation for them. We also discussed their new album Summit, and who their ideal touring partners might be.
My thanks again to Benjamin, Fredrik, and Stian for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
