Downfall Of Gaia combine everything from post-rock to sludge and dark crust to create their own style of atmospheric "post-black metal", which studiously avoids the clichés of their more "kvlt" peers. The (mostly) German group may not wear corpsepaint or spiked gauntlets, but their songs still contain the bleakness and melancholy that characterized black metal's second wave.
I spoke with guitarist/vocalist Dominik Goncalves dos Reis about how Downfall Of Gaia's sound developed from their previous crust band, Toxic Nation, and their desire to progress with every album. We also discussed the concept behind the band's latest album Silhouettes of Disgust, and what inspired the characters featured on each song.
My thanks again to Dominik for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
