Trying to categorize Denver's Dreadnought within the modern metal landscape is a tricky task. Putting its members' varied musical backgrounds to good use, the band combines metal with Seventies prog, jazz, and classical music, eluding both genre and typical song structures.
I spoke with guitarist/vocalist/flautist Kelly Schilling about how a classic game franchise inspires Dreadnought's albums, and when she decides a song needs saxophone. We also discussed why their latest album The Endless is more guitar-driven, what makes a "good song".
My thanks to Kelly for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening.
