Durham's Wailin Storms were one of the first bands I spoke to as the pandemic unfolded in 2020. They were on the road as gigs were cancelled due to new safety guidelines, scuttling their plans to tour in support of their Rattle album. Two years later, they've got a new album out, and are ready to pick up where they left off with their mix of death rock, post-punk, and doom (sometimes described as "if Bauhaus and Black Sabbath had a baby").
I spoke with guitarist/vocalist Justin Storms, drummer Mark Oates, and bassist Steve Stanczyk about how they navigated Covid restrictions to work on new material as a group. We also discussed how their Covid times affected the sound of their latest album, The Silver Snake Unfolds, and the IPA that a North Carolina brewery created especially for the album.
My thanks to Justin, Steve, and Mark for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
