On the surface, Falls of Rauros bear all the hallmarks of "cascadian black metal"; their blend of death/black, neo folk, and progressive rock bears many similarities to Agalloch and Wolves In The Throne Room, belying the the fact that the group is actually based in Portland, Maine (on the opposite side of the continent from their peers in the Pacific Northwest).
I had an in-depth discussion about the band's egalitarian writing process with guitarist/vocalist Aaron Charles, guitarist/vocalist Jordan Guerette and bassist Evan Lovely (the band is completed by drummer Ray Capizzo), and accounting for any similarities they might have with other USBM bands. We also talked about whether the musical development on their latest release, Key to a Vanishing Future, can be described as "mature".
My thanks to Aaron, Jordan, and Evan for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening.
