Minnsesota's Suffering Hour are an antidote to the hordes of newly popular "primitive" and "caveman" death metal bands. As chaotic as the trio's mix of death and black metal gets, at its core is a progressive mindset that sets the band apart from their peers.

I spoke with guitarist Josh "YhA" Raiken about how Suffering Hour emerged from his previous progressive/gothic thrash band, Compassion Dies. We also discussed how the band members worked remotely on Suffering Hour's upcoming second album, The Cyclic Reckoning, and whether it's a challenge to write metal songs if you don't listen to the style anymore.

My thanks to Josh for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening.
