A cello-driven power trio that shares members with Giant Squid, Squalus, and Amber Asylum, Grayceon are one of the most unique bands to come out of the Bay Area metal scene. Though often lumped in with the progressive and avant metal scenes, their music owes just as much to classical and folk music as it does to metal.
I spoke with cellist/vocalist Jackie Perez Gratz about how she ended up in a metal band, using classical instruments to make heavy music, and why it's a challenge to describe Grayceon's style. We also discussed how the band's songwriting process has changed from their earliest albums to their latest release, Mothers Weavers Destroyers, and whether or not Grayceon is a "message" band.
My thanks to Jackie for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening.
