"Experimental", "progressive" and "avant-garde" are the ways Toby Driver's music is usually described. With his bands Kayo Dot and maudlin of the Well - as well as the music he's released under his own name - the prolific songwriter creates music that goes beyond the typical genre conventions of "metal" or "prog rock".
I spoke with Toby about his music school education, his approach to recording, and the upcoming Kayo Dot album Blasphemy. We also discussed his last "solo" album They Are The Shield and the final maudlin of the Well album, Part The Second.
