Formerly based in Denver, but now spread out across the US and Canada, Allegaeon embrace modernity in a way that most death metal bands don't (or possibly won't/can't). Over the course of 7 albums, the band has expanded its style of melodic death metal to become more technical and progressive, while still maintaining the blistering speed that defines the genre.
I spoke with guitarist Greg Burgess about why the band goes on a writing retreat before recording, and learning to be more open to feedback about his songs. We also discussed the return of original vocalist Ezra Haynes for the band's latest album The Ossuary Lens, and how the band's long relationship with producer Dave Otero developed.
My thanks again to Greg for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
